She said, “Romeo take me somewhere, we can be alone, I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run, you’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess, it’s a love story, baby, just say yes!”

He said, “No.”

Imperfection is Perfection

I don’t watch a lot of movies, but there are some that have struck me over the years. Let’s talk, particularly about superhero movies. Superhero movies in the past are very different than the ones today. The ones today have witnessed a shift in the mentality. Take for instance, Superman. In the past, most Superman movies gave people a fantasy to live in – imagine a world where there is a protector Superman who saves the day. A person who, while in the midst of our darkest, most difficult moments, comes to save the day. It gave people this fantasy that there is a perfect world – it was somewhat a form of escapism.

Compare that, however, with Smallville. It is a series regarding Superman’s origins. It features the problems of mild-mannered Clark Kent, a teen who grew up in a farm, maturing as he struggles to get to grips with his growing abilities. Here we see a different picture of Superman – one riddled with troubles, one constantly plagued with problems – be it relationship, identity crisis or school.

Next, think about The Incredibles. A family of superheroes living in a world where superheroes screw up trying to save people using their supernatural powers. A dysfunctional family  at that, and yet they overcome their obstacles.

Spiderman 3 comes up next. As Peter Parker struggles with his feelings for MJ, he is faced with some black spiderish thing, consuming him with evil. He battles himself, trying to save himself from himself.

LOTR. Frodo the hobbit and a group of warriors and friends set out on a journey to destroy an evil ring. Along the way, people are tempted by the power of the ring. They are so obsessed with it that they were willing to do whatever it took to get their hands on it, including even to kill.

Harry Potter. A world of magical and non-magical coexisting, with decisions made at either end affecting the other. HP himself, en route to becoming the hero he needs to be, is first faced with many of the little challenges in his lifetime during his study at Hogwarts.
What do these things say? To me, they seem to send out a message to us. They no longer provide the fantasy no the escapism we seek. In contrast, they send out a different message. A more realistic message. They tell us that, these heroes, despite all their powers and abilities, are also human like you and me. They also struggle with themselves. They too have problems in their everyday lives.

But is that the end of the story? Certainly not! In Smallville, Clark eventually overcomes all and becomes Superman. He was the symbol of hope for people, uniting the galaxy in the fight against evil. In The Incredibles, the love between family prevails, and they work together to defeat that Omni droid dude. In Spiderman 3, Peter triumphs over his own dark side. In LOTR, the three remaining warriors, Aragon, Legolas and Gimli leave Frodo to flee from temptation, while clearing the path for Frodo. Gandalf the Grey who sacrificed himself for the sake of many returned more powerful, providing a greater assist for Frodo. Frodo’s friends helped keep his sanity in check, and in they end they all play a very important part in succeeding to destroy the ring. Harry Potter, on the other hand, matures through his trials, using his acquired experience and wisdom to defeat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. These things supply us with hope, knowing that if these superpower people overcame, then we can too. In some sense I guess they are something we can relate to. Maybe that’s what directors are gunning for these days.

Of course, there is another way we get our hope. One that is even more sure than any movie we can ever watch, any book we can ever read, any person we’ve ever met.

\phi:Girls->Pokemon is an isomorphism?

Saw this the other day. Pretty interesting.

Girls are a lot like Pokemon, there’s so many different kinds. Cute ones like Togepi, mean ones like Gyrados, if unlucky, a Snorlax or Gastly. Adorable ones that absolutely hate balls like Pikachu. Boring ones like Jigglypuff that put you to sleep then get mad at you later. There are ones that you can ride like Lapras. Then there are Caterpies that’re lonely and can’t shake off, they just cling to you. Then three years later they turn into Butterfrees who’re amazing. On the other hand, there’s Oddishe who turn into Glooms later on. There’s also some Psyducks out there and they’re as bad as Misty makes it look. There’s also many hot ones like Charmander, but when you splash water on them, all of their makeup washes away and they’re not so hot anymore. And Dittos, all they want to do is copy eachother. If you’re weak then you’re most likely to get controlled by Alakazams or Hypnos. Or maybe tossed around by Machamps. There aren’t that many slowpokes and slowbros in this world, but there however, many Cubones and Marowak all they want to do is hold bones all day and night. There’s also Lickitungs too which aren’t too bad, but then there’s also many Kangaskhan that run around on the streets. The good ones are rare, the bad ones are common, it’s every guys dream to catch them all but none has succeeded. In the end every guy just wants one thing, a Mew.

So, a Mew eh? hmm…

“Ah I had a long day yesterday.”

“I thought everyday also got 24 hours?”

Profound!

Yeah I guess I really have been bitter about what has happened. But what I’ve thought and what I’ve said, hasn’t it been nothing but the truth? I just think that sometimes as aware and informed as we try to be, we will still miss out something, we will still be unknowingly ignorant about something. It’s ironic, because we try too hard to make sure that we don’t miss out anything, but when it hits us we realize that we actually did.  It’s crazy, because even if we didn’t, we’ve spent too much time worrying about things that it made us stop living. So either way, we lose. We become like robots, like computers, being more thorough and perfect, when in reality human beings are far from perfect.

So what is the conclusion then? Let us move on and not look back, know why? Because we can GO THE DISTANCE!
